Synopsis:

The course is focused on fire resistance of concrete and masonry structures: concrete and concrete structures exposed to fire, design rules, thermal analysis, loads, design principles, design methods, material properties of concrete and steel reinforcement at high temperatures, fire design of masonry structures.

Syllabus of lectures:

1) Introduction to fire safety of buildings. Concrete and masonry structures exposed to fire.

2) Software to fire design of concrete and masonry structures. Thermal analysis of structures.

3) Fire design of concrete and masonry structures – design philosophies.

4) Material properties of concrete and steel reinforcement at high temperatures.

5) Fire design using tabulated data – beams, slabs, columns, walls.

6) Simplified calculation methods – 500°C isotherm method, zone method, columns, simplified calculation method for beams and slabs, calculation methods for shear and torsion, advanced calculation methods.

7) Fire design of high strength concrete members. Concrete structures after fire. Fire design of masonry structures.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Excercise A1: Internal forces in fire situation.

Excercise A2: Thermal analysis.

Excercise A3: Fire resistance check of beams and slabs using tabulated data.

Excercise A4: Fire resistance check of walls and columns using tabulated data.

Excercise A5: Fire resistance check using 500°C isotherm method and zone method.

Excercise A6: Consultation.

Study Objective:

The aim of the course is to obtain basic knowledge about fire resistance of concrete and masonry structures: concrete and concrete structures exposed to fire, design rules, thermal analysis, loads, design principles, design methods, material properties of concrete and steel reinforcement at high temperatures, fire design of masonry structures.
