The course focuses on theoretical and practical production of map outputs. Students will learn how to analyse and visualise data using cartographic conventions. Everything is theoretically accompanied from mathematical projecting techniques through an overview of methods used and important existing cartographic works to practical map production.

1. Mathematical cartography, basics of map display.
2. Coordinate systems used in the territory of the Czech Republic.
3. Cartography as a science, cartographic works, publishers, map collections.
4. Map language, labels on maps, geographical nomenclature.
5. Content elements of maps, generalization, representation of relief on maps.
6. Colour theory, principles of using colours on maps.
7. Thematic maps, methods of thematic expression.
8. History of cartography with emphasis on the first cartographic works of the Czech lands.
9. State map work civil and military. ZABAGED database.
10. Historical and contemporary printing techniques. Colour reproduction. Colour systems.
11. Editorial works. Copyright in cartography. Cartographic organisations, professional associations.
12. International projects in cartography, web maps and atlases.
13. Web services, cloud solutions, further development of digital cartography and publication of cartographic works.

The aim is to teach students the theory and practical issues of cartographic science so that they are able to analyse data and create from it a good quality thematic, topographic or overview map, understand the principles of their creation, the correct use of colours, fonts, etc.
