Synopsis:

The prerequisite of the course is very good knowledge of the Czech language, i.e., communicative competences at least at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference. It is focused partly on revision of standard language structures, but mainly on practising more complex grammatical structures typical of the style of science. Students are taught the basics of functional style of engineering and professional communication, both in spoken and written form. The topics include University Studies and Student Life. Written practice includes communication with teachers and faculty administrators.

Requirements:

Mastery of the material covered in the syllabus for the given semester.

Active participation in class.

Regular attendance, i.e. a maximum of 3 absences per semester

Proper preparation for each class, even in the case of previous absences. Each absence must be made up for (e.g., with a written assignment). Students may be penalized 5% on their zápočet test for being unprepared for class or failing to complete coursework.

Students must be prepared for each lesson. This means that they must have the necessary materials with them each week, including a textbook or other study materials. The materials can be also accessed electronically using a laptop or tablet (not a mobile phone). If a student attends class without the required study materials, this situation is considered an absence.

Independent completion and timely submission of all written assignments (see also note on the use of AI tools).

Final semester test with a minimum score of 60%. In case of failure, the credit test may be repeated once.

Note on the use of AI tool:

Especially for homework assignments, AI tools may be only used with express permission or recommendation.

In the case of unauthorized use of AI tools (e.g., text generation, text editing, etc.), i.e., the text is clearly written by someone else than the student (the submitted work is at a much higher language level than the student's level in class), the student must rewrite the text themselves. At the same time, 15% will be deducted from the student's zápočet test (both in the regular and retake attempts) for each such case. The same procedure applies in cases of plagiarism.

Syllabus of lectures:

Knowledge based on the required and recommended sources, i.e., competence in orthography, morphology, syntax, style; appropriate oral skills

Syllabus of tutorials:

The course is run as a series of seminars following the topics and scope of the syllabus mentioned above.

Study Objective:

Knowledge:

Morphology, syntax, and lexis at the level appropriate to the course, particularly orthography of foreign words, more difficult declension of nouns, passive voice.

Skills:

To use the acquired knowledge in everyday communication and in more professional contexts, particularly in formal writing of definitions; reach a good level of phonetics and language culture.
