- Synopsis:
-
The course is designed for students who have successfully completed AP1 and is a continuation of the Advanced English course. The AP2 course builds on content covered in AP1, thus extending the students skills for working with texts relating to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and honing spoken and written communication in STEM contexts. The course extends the students academic vocabulary, through exposure to a wide variety of diverse texts and broadens knowledge of key aspects of grammar (referred to as Language Topics), pertinent to effective academic discourse and communication. There is a specific emphasis on responding to graphic data and the synthesizing of comprehensive and nuanced interpretations of such data. There is a focus on formal conventions in written communication including sentence and paragraph structure, discourse marking and cohesion. As in AP1, considerations of the purpose and concomitant style which is typical of academic and professional oral and written communication is explored through sample materials. And once again, students are expected to discuss ideas with colleagues prior to participating in plenary sessions. Full and active participation is a basic expectation.
- Requirements:
-
Attendance
Students are allowed to have three excused absences per semester. If the number of absences exceeds that limit (unless under exceptional circumstances), they will be excluded from taking the zápočet.
Coursework
A mandatory requirement of the course is to complete all the weekly homework assignments before the given deadline.
Assessment
The end of semester zápočet consists of vocabulary and grammar exercises (constituting 50% of the final grade) and a written task, an Essay Interpreting a Graph (also constituting 50% of the final grade). Throughout the weekly lectures, students encounter study material which includes the key vocabulary to be featured in the zápočet. Students are expected to record and learn any new and unfamiliar vocabulary. The grammar featured in the zápočet is referred to as Language Topics and these are taught as discrete units within the programme of study. The skills needed to write a successful essay are also covered in specific lectures and students are given opportunities to practise these skills.
The pass mark of the zápočet is 60% which must be achieved in both the vocabulary and grammar part, and in the written task. Should a student fail, there is a second chance to retake it at 70%.
