Synopsis:

The AM2 course expects the student to have completed the AM1 course. It develops their skills for work with subtechnical texts, focusing also more on specific grammar, functions, and lexical items typical of ESP and EAP (e.g., definition, existence and classification of phenomena, object descriptions).

Part of the course is also guided writing. If necessary, grammar revision is included.

Requirements:

Mastery of the material covered in the syllabus for the given semester.

Active participation in class.

Regular attendance, i.e. a maximum of 3 absences per semester

Proper preparation for each class, even in the case of previous absences. Each absence must be made up for (e.g., with a written assignment). Students may be penalized 5% on their zápočet test for being unprepared for class or failing to complete coursework.

Students must be prepared for each lesson. This means that they must have the necessary materials with them each week, including a textbook or other study materials. The materials can be also accessed electronically using a laptop or tablet (not a mobile phone). If a student attends class without the required study materials, this situation is considered an absence.

Independent completion and timely submission of all written assignments (see also note on the use of AI tools).

Final semester test with a minimum score of 60%. In case of failure, the credit test may be repeated once.

Note on the use of AI tool:

Especially for homework assignments, AI tools may be only used with express permission or recommendation.

In the case of unauthorized use of AI tools (e.g., text generation, text editing, etc.), i.e., the text is clearly written by someone else than the student (the submitted work is at a much higher language level than the student's level in class), the student must rewrite the text themselves. At the same time, 15% will be deducted from the student's zápočet test (both in the regular and retake attempts) for each such case. The same procedure applies in cases of plagiarism.

Syllabus of lectures:

Definitions, classification and existence, formal rules and regulations. Description of objects (location, position, movement, properties of materials). Description of method, purpose, experiment, proces. Comparisons of objects and phenomena. Language issues typical of EAP, fundamental vocabulary in physics and chemistry.

Syllabus of tutorials:

The course is run as a series of seminars following the topics and scope of the syllabus mentioned above.

Study Objective:

Knowledge:

Morphology, syntax, and lexis at the level appropriate to the course, namely: impersonal structures, infinitive of purpose, prepositional phrases, abbreviations and words of Latin and Greek origin. Comparatives and superlatives. Extended formal vocabulary, extended subtechnical vocabulary, basic terms in physics and chemistry.

Skills:

To apply the acquired knowledge in more professional contexts both in speaking and writing: to define and classify objects, phenomena and processes, distinguish formal and informal language structures, read a technical text.
