Synopsis:

The course introduces other more complex grammatical structures and their application in communication based on technical texts, such as the relation between technology and society, the world at the beginning of the 21st century, linguistically more demanding texts on the environment, the language of mathematics, computers and car technology etc. Students practise reading for information and reading aloud, and appropriate language for various purposes in oral and written communication. The course systematically revises other grammatical phenomena important for professional discourse (participles, relative clauses).

Requirements:

Mastery of the material covered in the syllabus for the given semester.

Active participation in class.

Regular attendance, i.e. a maximum of 3 absences per semester (or 6 absences for beginner courses). In justified cases, absences are assessed individually.

Proper preparation for each class, even in the case of previous absences. Each absence must be made up for (e.g., with a written assignment).

Independent completion and timely submission of all written assignments.

Final semester test with a minimum score of 60%. Without the express permission of the instructor, students may not use any aids during the test.

In case of failure, the credit test may be repeated once. If the student fails the credit test on the second attempt, they must re-enroll in the course in the following academic year.

Students may take the exam after completing all courses and obtaining the relevant credits (5 courses at the Z level, 3 courses at the M and P levels).

The exam consists of a written and an oral part.

The course is run as a series of seminars following the topics and scope of the syllabus mentioned above.

Study Objective:

Knowledge:

Morphology, syntax, and lexis at the level appropriate to the course, particularly irregular verbs, participles, gerund, abbreviations; fundamental terms in mathematics and physics.

Skills:

To use the acquired knowledge in everyday communication and in more professional contexts, namely to explain thermonuclear fusion, express units and operations in mathematics and physics.
