Department of Humanities and Languages
Synopsis:

The course develops the skills that enable students to cope with features typical of professional style. Increasing attention is paid to developing subtechnical vocabulary and independent understanding of professional texts. Great emphasis is placed on distinguishing different levels of formal and informal oral and written communication and their appropriate Czech equivalents. The course also includes studying abstracts and rules for writing them as well as basic rules for preparing and giving a short presentation on a chosen topic related to the student´s field.

Requirements:

Mastery of the material covered in the syllabus for the given semester.

Active participation in class.

Regular attendance, i.e. a maximum of 3 absences per semester

Proper preparation for each class, even in the case of previous absences. Each absence must be made up for (e.g., with a written assignment). Students may be penalized 5% on their zápočet test for being unprepared for class or failing to complete coursework.

Students must be prepared for each lesson. This means that they must have the necessary materials with them each week, including a textbook or other study materials. The materials can be also accessed electronically using a laptop or tablet (not a mobile phone). If a student attends class without the required study materials, this situation is considered an absence.

Independent completion and timely submission of all assignments, both written (see also note on the use of AI tools) and oral (presentation).

Final semester test with a minimum score of 60%. In case of failure, the credit test may be repeated once.

Note on the use of AI tool:

Especially for homework assignments, AI tools may be only used with express permission or recommendation.

In the case of unauthorized use of AI tools (e.g., text generation, text editing, etc.), i.e., the text is clearly written by someone else than the student (the submitted work is at a much higher language level than the student's level in class), the student must rewrite the text themselves. At the same time, 15% will be deducted from the student's zápočet test (both in the regular and retake attempts) for each such case. The same procedure applies in cases of plagiarism.

Syllabus of lectures:

Reading mathematical expressions, graph description. Professional formal communication - polite requests, letter of application. Fundamentals of textual grammar, linking ideas in sentences and paraghraphs, basic differences between Czech and English punctuation. Expressing similarities and differencies, structures used to express emphasis. Writing an abstract, basic principles for giving a presentation.

Syllabus of tutorials:

The course is run as a series of seminars following the topics and scope of the syllabus mentioned above.
