Synopsis:

The course is designed for students who have successfully completed the full secondary school English language course at least at the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It provides an introduction into English for Specific and Academic Purposes (ESP, EAP), i.e., into fundamentals of vocabulary and style typical of professional oral and written communication situations. Thus it covers topics related to the student´s life and needs as well as topics of subtechnical interest. Attention is also paid to extending the knowledge of grammar issues used in EAP.

Requirements:

Mastery of the material covered in the syllabus for the given semester.

Active participation in class.

Regular attendance, i.e. a maximum of 3 absences per semester

Proper preparation for each class, even in the case of previous absences. Each absence must be made up for (e.g., with a written assignment). Students may be penalized 5% on their zápočet test for being unprepared for class or failing to complete coursework.

Students must be prepared for each lesson. This means that they must have the necessary materials with them each week, including a textbook or other study materials. The materials can be also accessed electronically using a laptop or tablet (not a mobile phone). If a student attends class without the required study materials, this situation is considered an absence.

Independent completion and timely submission of all written assignments (see also note on the use of AI tools).

Final semester test with a minimum score of 60%. In case of failure, the credit test may be repeated once.

Without the express permission of the instructor, students may not use any aids during the test.

Note on the use of AI tool:

Especially for homework assignments, AI tools may be only used with express permission or recommendation.

In the case of unauthorized use of AI tools (e.g., text generation, text editing, etc.), i.e., the text is clearly written by someone else than the student (the submitted work is at a much higher language level than the student's level in class), the student must rewrite the text themselves. At the same time, 15% will be deducted from the student's zápočet test (both in the regular and retake attempts) for each such case. The same procedure applies in cases of plagiarism.

Syllabus of lectures:

University study, curriculum vitae. Basic principles of academic formal language, difference between formal and informal discourse, false friends. Working with various types of dictionaries. Describing objects (shape, size, structure, how it works, introduction to process description), expressing instructions. Extending the knowledge of grammar - word formation, tenses, passive voice, relative clauses, if clauses.

Syllabus of tutorials:

The course is run as a series of seminars following the topics and scope of the syllabus mentioned above.

Study Objective:

Knowledge:

Morphology, syntax, and lexis at the level appropriate to the course, namely: word formation, tenses, passive voice, relative clauses, if clauses. Basic differences between formal and informal language, fundamental subtechnical vocabulary, false friends.
