Synopsis:

The course is at the level of advanced English, designed for students who have successfully completed the full secondary school English language course (at least to the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - CEFR). It provides an introduction into English for Specific and Academic Purposes (ESP, EAP), providing insights into the fundamentals of vocabulary, grammar, and the purpose and style which is typical of academic and professional oral and written communication situations concerning science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) contexts. There is an emphasis on reading material and discussing ideas with colleagues prior to participating in plenary sessions. Full and active participation is a basic expectation.

Requirements:

Competence at the CEFR B1 level in reading, writing, listening, speaking and use of English.

The course is run as a series of lectures and seminars following the topics and scope of the course outline mentioned above. Students are expected to participate in group reading, vocabulary and grammar exercises, and discussions leading to individual contributions in plenary sessions.

Study Objective:

Knowledge:

Morphology, syntax, and lexis; word formation; subordinate clauses; differences between formal and informal communication in speech and writing; academic and STEM-specific vocabulary; mathematical expressions; effective content, structure and style in methods and materials sections of research papers.

Skills:

To apply the acquired knowledge in everyday communication and in more professional and academic contexts both in speaking and writing. To apply various reading strategies when responding to new material and to write a formal text (a report describing a process).
