Synopsis:

Numerical computing in applied mathematics: course for beginners.

Requirements:

Active participating in lectures. Homework and seminar work.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Finite element method.

2. Solving systems of linear equations.

3. Higher order basis functions.

4. FEM for 2D problems.

5. Piece-wise linear basis functions.

6. Iterative methods for systems of linear equations.

7. Conjugate gradient method.

8. Preconditioning.

9. Spectra of preconditioned systems.

10. Convergence estimates.

11. Nonlinear problems and Newton's method.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Learning Matlab and coding.

Practising numerical algorithms.

Convergence issues.

Working on individual projects.

Study Objective:

Improving the students' skils in numerical method for applied mathematics.
