Synopsis:

The course includes the analysis of various phases of the logistics chain and their potential optimization, primarily in terms of logistics costs, but also in terms of minimizing traffic load, maximizing the use of warehouse capacities, and streamlining handling.

Requirements:

Basic knowledge of graph theory and mathematical analysis, basic orientation in economic terms: cost, revenue, profit, price...

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction to Logistics and Logistics Systems Basic concepts, terminology, and logistics situations

2. Logistics Costs I Types of logistics costs and cost calculation methods

3. Logistics Costs II Cost optimization models under deterministic and stochastic demand conditions

4. Transportation Logistics I Shortest-path and least-cost routing problems, path optimization as a mathematical programming problem, optimal shipment allocation

5. Transportation Logistics II Node and arc servicing in transportation networks; the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP): heuristic and approximation approaches, mathematical programming formulation of the TSP, the Chinese Postman Problem

6. Transportation Logistics III Single-stage and multi-stage transportation problems

7. Fundamentals of Markovian Queueing Systems

8. Inventory Logistics I Inventory management models under certainty and uncertainty

9. Inventory Logistics II Stochastic inventory models based on queueing theory

10. Production and Materials Handling Logistics I Unit loads, handling equipment and facilities, practical examples

11. Production and Materials Handling Logistics II Material flow analysis, location and allocation models

12. Fractal Logistics Networks

13. Integrated Logistics System Case Study

Syllabus of tutorials:

The practical sessions are divided in an 8:4 ratio between:A. Application of Logistics System Models (8 sessions),

and B. Group Semester Project Development with Instructor Consultation (4 sessions). The final practical session is devoted to project presentations and assessment.

A. Application of Logistics System Models sessions:

1) Simulation modelling of logistics systems.

2) Analytical modelling of logistics systems with deterministic demand.

3) Analytical modelling of logistics systems with stochastic demand.

4) Transportation logistics optimization models (routing, touring, network servicing, segmentations) Part I.

5) Transportation logistics optimization models (routing, touring, network servicing, segmentations Part II.

6) Inventory logistics optimization models (demand variability and safety stock).

7) Material handling and production logistics models (location and allocation problems) Part I.

8) Material handling and production logistics models (location and allocation problems) Part II.

Study Objective:

The aim of the course is to understand the essence of logistics, relationships between the movement of materials and goods in the logistics chain. Students will learn that logistics is not „just transport“ or „just warehouses“, but a highly sophisticated branch dealing with broader connections between movements, manipulation and warehousing. Logistics requires in-depth knowledge of primarily quantitative approaches. These approaches are discussed and subsequently applied in a wider range of mathematical models of the logistics system, enabling understanding of the chain's behavior, its harmonization and streamlining of its management - ideally to optimize it as a whole, or at least some of its parts.
