Synopsis:

Aerodynamic drag, relation between drag and speed, streamline, boundary layer, formula of continuity, formula of Bernoulli, lift and drag, air flow and pressures around wing, angle of attack, reactions of wing in air flow, lift and drag of a wing and an aircraft, coefficient of lift and drag, critical angle of attack, wing with final span, induced drag, interference, devices for lift and drag increase.

The course content is based on the requirements of Commission Regulation (EU) No 1178/2011. Numbers in brackets are the topics specified in Appendix "Subject 081 - Principles of Flight - Airplanes' to AMC1 FCL.310; FCL.515 (b); FCL.615 (b).

•Basics of airflow, Aerodynamic forces on aerofoils, Wing shape (081 01 01 00)

•Two-dimensional airflow around an aerofoil, Stagnation point, Influence of angle of attack (081 01 02 00)

•The lift & drag coefficient (081 01 03 00)

•Three-dimensional airflow around an aeroplane, Induced drag (081 01 04 00)

•Total drag, Parasite drag, Variables affecting the total drag-speed graph (081 01 05 00)

•The relationship between lift coefficient and speed in steady, straight, and level flight (081 01 07 00)

•The stall, CLMAX augmentation (081 03 01 00, 081 01 09 00)

•Ground effect, Effect on lift coefficient (081 01 06 00)

•Means to reduce the CL-CD ratio (081 01 10 00, 081 01 12 00)

•Flight mechanics - forces acting on an aeroplane, Straight, horizontal, steady flight (081 08 01 01)

•Propellers - conversion of engine torque to thrust (081 07 01 00)

Study Objective:

The goal of the course is to explain principles of aerodynamics with the intention of low-speed aerodynamics.
