Department of Materials Engineering
Synopsis:

Introduction to the properties of the biological environment, the response of materials to the effects of the living system, function and degradation of materials in vitro and in vivo (plastics, metals, dissolution, corrosion). Tribological properties of materials - friction, abrasion. Mechanical properties of biomaterials: metals, ceramics, plastics, carbon, composites. Effect of chemical properties of biomaterial surface and corrosion resistance on biocompatibility, haemocompatibility, allergic reactions, carcinogenicity; adaptation of the organism. Clinical use of biomaterials. Biocompatibility tests (in vitro, in vivo). Standardization and administration of biomaterials. Selection and design of biomaterial for application.

•Biocompatibility - Concepts and Definitions; properties of the biological environment

•Mechanical properties of biomaterials: metals, ceramics, plastics, carbon, composites

•Function and degradation of materials in vitro and in vivo (plastics, metals, dissolution, corrosion).

•Methods of determining the structure and composition of the material

•Surface properties of biomaterials (topographic, tribological, chemical)

•Functional properties of biomaterials, degradation

•Surface treatment - thin layers and coatings

•Immune system, haemocompatibility, allergic reactions, carcinogenicity; adaptation of the organism
