Synopsis:

Green transition is sometimes imagined as a technical question involving mostly energy production and industrial processes. Nonetheless, wider societal, economic and political contexts are indispensable to successful transformation. The course introduces different transition approaches focusing on such wider frameworks and stressing the interconnections between politics, markets, industry, and social changes. Theoretical concepts of transformation will then be linked to current reality in specific regions (with emphasis on but not limited to the EU).

Transformation theories and concepts: Sustainability, green growth, green new deals, just transition, third industrial revolution, degrowth, digitalisation, circular economy, energy democracy, decentralisation (5 w)

Facilitating the change: Mobilizing finance, funds and subsidies, facilitating collaboration, European Green Deal (3 w)

Case studies: Transition regions, best practice of strategic planning for regional development, classroom workshops (5 w)

Upon successful completion the students will be able to

Differentiate between various paradigms of green transition and their priorities

Understand the scope of social, economic and political shifts implied by green transition

Find innovation or business opportunities in specific transition contexts

Identify priorities and key bottlenecks in specific transition regions

Critically assess major trade-offs and synergies in selecting a specific transition strategy
