Synopsis:

The course focuses on basic principles of nuclear facilities safety, especially nuclear power plant and research reactors. The first part of lectures follows up legislative framework for safety assessment, roles of state, regulatory authority and nuclear installation’s operator, and the Czech legislation, international recommendations (IAEA, EUROATOM, WENRA, …). The second part of the course focuses on safety philosophy development, basic principles of defence in depth, safety systems of current reactors, GEN III+ and GEN IV reactors. The third part deals with different approach to

nuclear safety assessment (deterministic, probabilistic, best-estimate) and human factor impact to safe operation. The last part is dedicated to loss of coolant accidents and criticality accidents. Analysis of several accidents is included into the course (A1, Three Mile Island 2, Chernobyl, Fukushima, Windscale). The last lecture covers safety aspects of research reactors operation.
