Using practical examples this course helps to understand basicc concepts of solid state physics.

1. Crystal Structure – Miller indices, SC, BCC structures
2. Crystal Structure - FCC, HCP structures
3. Wawe diffraction and the reciprocal lattice – interplanar separation, volume of the first Brillouin zone, width of diffraction maximum
4. Wawe diffraction and the reciprocal lattice – structure factor, reciprocal lattice vectors
5. Crystal Bindings – Lennard–Jones potential, cohesive energy
6. Crystal Bindings and elastic constants – ionic crystals, Madelung constant
7. Phonons–Crystal Vibrations – monoatomic linear lattice, continuum wave equation, Kohn anomaly
8. Phonons–Crystal Vibrations – diatomic chain, atomic vibration in a metal
9. Phonons–Thermal properties – density of states singularity, Debye approximation, Heat capacity
10. Free electron Fermi Gas – kinetic energy of electron gas, chemical potential, Liquid He
11. Free electron Fermi Gas – frequency dependence of the electrical conductivity, dynamic and static magnetoconductivity tensor
12. Semiconductor Crystals – Kronig–Penney model, energy gap
