Synopsis:

Overview and categorization of medical (diagnostic devices) according to international directives (EU directives), including correct terminology. The electrical safety of medical equipment operation.

Medical technology in clinical practice; Construction of diagnostic apparatus; Biosignal amplifiers, sensing electrodes, recording systems; Measurement of cardiac electrical activity (ECG) - electrocardiographs, vector cardiographs; Blood pressure monitors - NIBP; Blood pressure measuring instruments - IBP, PCWP; Dilution measurement of cardiac output, Swan-Ganz catheter; SpO2 pulse oximetry; Vital signs monitors, central monitoring systems. Special monitors for clinical practice - cardiotocographs, NIRS, BIS; Electroimpedance methods in clinical practice - a measurement of respiration by impedance method, EIT; Measurement of brain bioelectrical activity (EEG); Measurement of muscle bioelectric activity (EMG); Spirometry; Examination of the auditory system; Simulators and testers of diagnostic equipment.

Requirements:

Credit (Assessment) requirements:

1) Elaboration of all required protocols and tasks from laboratory exercises according to the teacher's assignment and their submission within the set deadlines. Correction of submitted works according to the teacher's instructions.

2) Active participation in laboratory exercises; duly excused and compensated absences.

Exam evaluation:

1) Written semester test given at the lecture during the semester (20% points). The questions are from the content of lectures and exercises, including the assigned independent study and homework, discussed by the end of the immediately preceding teaching week. Participation in the semester test is not mandatory and its completion is not a condition for obtaining credit.

2) Final exam (80% points). The exam is in written form. The questions are from the content of lectures and exercises, including the assigned independent study and homework. It is not allowed to use literature or other help during the exam. The condition for including points from the exam in the overall evaluation of the subject is the gain of at least 40 points (50%) from the final written exam.

Students are expected to have knowledge of mathematics, physics, physical chemistry, anatomy and physiology in the first four semesters of the field of BMT when entering the semester test and exam questions.

Study Objective:

The course aims to acquaint students with an overview and categorization of medical devices (diagnostic medical techniques except imaging modalities), with appropriate terminology, with block diagrams of important diagnostic electrical devices, including an explanation of the principle of their functions, important parameters of these devices, specifications of their use, possible artifacts affecting the output and safety requirements.

Specifically, these are devices for measuring basic vital functions (ECG, blood pressure, pulse oximetry), as well as advanced monitoring systems, so-called central monitoring stations, special monitors such as cardiotocograph, regional oxygenation monitor, EEG, EMG, audiometers, spirometers, etc. .

Everything will be discussed in connection with applicable legislation and Czech state standards for medical devices.
