Synopsis:

This course introduces the physical, electronic, biological principles of biosensors and provides information on past, present and future technologies. Various mechanisms and sensor concepts for specific applications (such as detection of glucose, urea, proteins, cells, bacteria, etc.) are explained. In addition, the course introduces the use of modern nanostructures and nanomaterials in biosensors to achieve reliable and sensitive devices for diagnosis at the point of care, in food safety or environmental monitoring. We will also discuss current challenges and future perspectives for various applications of biosensors.

Requirements:

Students pass the exam by written test and oral examination. Students prepare reports from laboratory exercises.

3.Bioreceptor - catalytic (equilibrium) and affinity (equilibrium)

4.Surface Function - Physical and Chemical Immobilization

5.Electrochemical and Electrochemiluminescence - Overview and Applications

6.Optical - fluorescence and colorimetric study

7.Field controlled transistors - Sensors and applications

8.Nanobiosectors - top down (nanostructures)

9.Nanobiosectors - bottom up (nanomaterials)

10.BioMEMS / NEMS - Microfluidic, SAW

11.Application of biosensors - market for health care

12.Reliability of biosensors - in food and environment

13.New trends in biosensors - wearable biosensors, laboratory on chip

14.Current global biosensors challenges and future developments, final summary

Syllabus of tutorials:

The laboratory exercises introduce the construction and functional principles of biosensors in a practical and entertaining way. Exercises take place in the form of independent work of students in the laboratory and demonstrations.The exercises also include an excursion to collaborating research institutes.
