Supervisor:
Department of Architecture
Synopsis:

The lectures focus on architecture from the perspective of various aspects of sustainable construction. The lectures also cover the topic of industrial heritage, its identification, evaluation, methods of protection and possibilities of conversion as a contribution to the sustainability of construction and the preservation of the memory of the place and architectural values. In the exercises (seminars), all these principles are then confronted with recent implementations and their benefits and possible risks are evaluated.

Requirements:

Attendance at lectures is mandatory. A condition for awarding credit is also the preparation of a seminar paper of the specified scope and its presentation in the exercise.

Syllabus of lectures:

The lectures focus in the first part on various technical principles, usable especially in the design phase and reducing the adverse impacts of construction and operation of buildings on the environment. The second part of the lecture series focuses on industrial buildings as a specific phenomenon, which is characterized by often large buildings, affecting the wide surroundings - but today having the ability to be - with appropriate new use - a significant socio-cultural phenomenon.

Lectures:

1. Sustainable construction 1

Principles, methods of evaluation, methodologies of comprehensive quality of buildings from the perspective of sustainable construction. Basic technical measures for sustainable construction. Materials and structures from the perspective of sustainable construction.

2. Sustainable construction 2

Natural and recycled materials in architecture

3. Sustainable construction 3

Passive and sustainable architecture - general principles of design. Heat and thermal stability, energy from renewable sources, orientation and location, shape optimization. The importance of layout and technical details..

4. Industrial buildings 1

Development, industrial revolution (1.0, 2.0, 3.0), development of typology, single-purpose and multi-purpose buildings and areas, combined production buildings

5. Industrial buildings 2

Industrial heritage - development of the approach to abandoned production buildings, evaluation, classification, possibilities and benefits of conversions

6. Industrial buildings 3

Brownfields - emergence, types, approaches to possible use. Main complications, dangers and problems in the new use of original industrial areas (contamination, devastation, ...) and possible technical and technological approaches. Examples of successful implementations in the world and in the Czech Republic.

Syllabus of tutorials:

There are 2 assignments for the exercise - a presentation of one's own idea of ideal housing and a presentation of a recently completed building from the perspective of sustainable construction. The topic „ideal housing“ will be worked on by each student individually, for the seminar work, students will join in pairs or trios.

1st exercise Introduction

Introduction to the course of the semester and the conditions for awarding credit. Explanation of both assignments - the main presentation and the assignment for next week. Explain the content of the main presentation, emphasize the fact that the building must be environmentally sensitive, economical, and efficient. Prefer the possibility of a personal visit. Discussion of the topic „ideal housing“.

2nd exercise Parallel:

A) - Processing the topic „ideal housing“ into a simple graphic form - 1-3 sheets (slides), any method of representation. Each student will work on the task on their own.

B) - Reporting to groups for processing the seminar work, selection of topics.

3rd and 4th exercises. Presentation of the graphic design of „ideal housing“ and joint discussion

5th and 6th semesters. Consultation of completed seminar papers

Students must bring the collected documents and a list of legislative requirements for the selected building to the consultation

7th-11th semesters. Presentation of seminar papers and discussion

12th semester Final evaluation, credits

Study Objective:

The aim is to deepen the knowledge necessary for further study and design practice. The subject has no direct links to other subjects, but its mastery is necessary for further studio work, especially for a design studio and bachelor's thesis, not only from an architectural, but also from a construction and economic point of view. It emphasizes contemporary trends in development, clarification and promotion of the principles of sustainable development in construction and architecture, and introduces the latest trends connecting architecture with technology and environmental care.
