Supervisor:
Department of Road Structures
Synopsis:

The course is designed as an introduction to the problems of the relationship between road and rail transport and the environment. In more detail, it is aimed at the issue of noise and anti-noise measures from the point of view of a civil engineer in the field of rail transport. In the field of road transport, the subject is focused on traffic calming and control, solutions for urban and pedestrian zones, solutions for non-motorized traffic, including material, technological and design solutions.

Requirements:

Submitting the project within the prescribed deadline and scope.

Mandatory participation in training, maximum 2 excused absences.

Continuous correction of work and control during the course.

The above requirements are necessary but not sufficient conditions for successful completion of the course

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Construction of the railway track - the body of the construction of the railway track with a focus on the sleeper bed, composition, properties, material.

2. Evaluation of traffic noise Part I - sound, noise, vibrations, sound perception, acoustic levels, addition of levels, sound sources and their characteristics, issues of traffic noise, the possibility of evaluating traffic noise.

3. Evaluation of traffic noise II. part - options for evaluating traffic noise, noise legislation.

4. Anti-noise measures (ANM) - active and passive ANM, division according to ANM application, effectiveness, implementation.

5. Legal principles of road structures, directional design of road structures, earthwork and earth moving.

6. Urban roads and intersections (crossroads)

7. Traffic calming and traffic control

8. Urban zones and pedestrians zones

9. Parking problems, parking lots and garages

10. Traffic signs, parts and equipment of road structures

11. Materials and technologies in road construction

12. Negative effects of road structures and automobile traffic on the environment

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Calculation and drawing of a directional curve with end symmetrical clothoidal transition, design parameters.

2. Calculation of the basic equivalent sound pressure level from railway traffic, working with rail transport graphics.

3. Calculation of the reduction of the acoustic level in the protected outdoor area of the building from rail traffic due to the height and distance of the noise barrier from the assessed point.

4. Consultation of the results of previous assigned tasks, discussion of assigned topics.

5. Parking lot design - calculation of the number of parking spaces and the layout design

6. Parking lot design - drainage

7. Urban road reconstruction design - situation

8. Urban road reconstruction design - cross sections and design of the pavement structure

9. Urban road reconstruction design - horizontal and vertical traffic signs

10. Urban road reconstruction design - viewing conditions

11. Urban road reconstruction design - completion of the project design

Study Objective:

The goal of this course is to provide students with a more detailed view of the design, assessment and implementation of road and railway structures in the context of environmental issues. In the part of road structures, the course deals with the following problems: urban roads and intersections, traffic calming and control, non-motorized traffic, view distances, parking problems, garages, traffic signs, parts and equipment of road structures, materials and technologies in road construction, the negative effects of road structures and automobile traffic on the environment.

In the part of railway constructions, the course deals with the following issues: advantages and disadvantages of rail transport from the point of view of selected components of the environment, in the field of rail transport, explanation of the concepts of point, line and area source of noise, basic physical principles in the field of noise, sources of noise in the field of rail transport, anti-noise measures in rail transport, division of anti-noise measures according to materials and construction, advantages and disadvantages of basic constructions of anti-noise measures, examples of applications.
