Synopsis:

Theoretical Geodesy 4 introduces students to the field of space geodesy, i.e. using satellite observations of the Earth to define and maintain global coordinate systems, the Earth orientation parameters, models of the Earth's gravity field and ocean topography. The outputs of space geodesy form the basis from which one of the most widely used measurement techniques in geodesy – GNSS – is based.

Requirements:

155TGD1, 155TGD2, 155TGD3

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction to space geodesy, history of measuring the shape and dimensions of the Earth.

2. Horizontal, equatorial and ecliptic coordinate system, daily movement of the stars.

3. Apparent phenomena and changes in the coordinates of celestial bodies

4. Time measurement - rotational, dynamic, atomic time.

5. Parameters of Earth's orientation - precesion and nutation, Earth's rotation

6. Dynamics of motion of artificial satellites, Kepler motion.

7. Disturbing motion of satellites, LPE, GPE.

9. Space geodesy observation methods - VLBI, SLR, GNSS, satellite altimetry.

9. Reverse solution of satellite geodesy, geometric/dynamic method.

10. Satellites for space geodesy

11. Implementation of ICRS/ITRS/ETRS reference systems.

12. Global gravity field models – static and dynamic

13. Applications of space geodesy and their use.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Transformation between astronomical coordinate systems

2. Daily movement of cosmic objects

3. Determination of astronomical orientation from measurements on the Sun

4. Changing the distance between stations due to the movement of tectonic plates

Study Objective:
