Synopsis:

The student will be acquainted with the importance of radiotherapy in context of complex oncological therapy, with types, principles of the function, use of irradiation technique, physical-technical aspects of the radiotherapeutic technique operation, planning of the treatment, importance of dosage and fractionation in radiotherapy and with modern techniques in radiotherapy.

Requirements:

100% participation in practical exercises, lectures,

passing the classified credit by the method set.

Syllabus of lectures:

The position of radiotherapy in the strategy of treating oncological diseases. Tactics of radiotherapy: radical, adjuvant, palliative treatment, combination teletherapy and brachyradiotherapy, potentiation of the treatment.

The instrumentation in external radiotherapy. Principles, clinical use.

Brachytherapy - instrumentation, clinical practice.

Dosimetry in clinical practice.

Undesirable effects of ionizing radiation.

Fractionation scheme in radiotherapy. Mathematical models of fractionation in radiotherapy.

Imaging methods in radiotherapy and their use for planning the treatment.

Planning of radiotherapy (2D, 3D, IMRT (Intensity modulated radiotherapy)).

IGRT (image-guided radiotherapy) and stereotactic radiotherapy. Principles and clinical use.

Hyperthermia, photodynamic therapy, other physical possibilities of the potentiation of radiotherapy.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Practical exercises related to topically presented theme. Form of problems, their solution, case reports.
