Basic definitions of a fire, explosion and burning. Description, analysis and modeling of the forementioned processes. Temperature distribution field and its influence on the building constructions. Pressure distribution field and shock waves, their origination and propagation. Dynamic effects of the shock waves. Tension and stress in building constructions and materials caused by pressure waves and high temperatures. Fire extinguishing.



Syllabus of lectures:

basic terms: heat, temperature, heat flow, area density of heat flow, heat of combustion, calorific value, degree of flammability, class of reaction to fire, flash point, burning temperature, ignition temperature,

definition of fire, classification of fires according to burning substances,

types of heat sharing, heat sharing by conduction, heat sharing by flow, heat sharing by radiation,

Fourier's law of heat conduction, coefficient of thermal conductivity, differential equation of heat conduction, steady one-dimensional heat conduction, surface thermal resistance, boundary layer, Newton's relation,

emission and absorption, reflectivity, transmission and absorption of radiation, Kirchhoff's law of radiation, Stefan - Boltzmann's law, Lambert's law,

definition of explosion, detonation, distribution of explosives, explosive limit

speed of fire spread, fire initiation (ignition) possibilities,

diagram of fire progress - dependence of temperature on time, flashover,

fire resistance, standard temperature curve,

fire extinguishing principles, extinguishing agents - classification, types of fire extinguishers, use of fire extinguishers according to the type of burning substance

Syllabus of tutorials:

The exercises are organized as visits to Technical institute of fire protection in Prague and Fire research institute in Veseli nad Luznici.

Study Objective:

The aim of the course is to get students acquainted with basic physical principles of fire, explosion, fire extinguishing and non-equilibrium thermodynamics.
