Synopsis:

High-strength concrete, fibre concrete, self-compacting concrete, shotcrete and fibreconcretes, lightweight concrete, heavyweight concrete; their properties and applications in practice. New findings in technology.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction. Examples of modern concrete applications. Types of modern concrete. Terminology.

2. Basic mechanical-physical properties. Concrete specification. Tensile strength, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity. Testing.

3. Components of concrete, hydration, heat (types, functions, interaction, influence on properties of fresh and hardened concrete).

4. Concrete from recycled aggregate. Types of recycled aggregate, sources, possibilities, limitations. Legislation.

5. Creep, shrinkage. Mechanism. Measures. Context.

6. Fibre concretes, polymer concretes. Properties, composition, advantages, limitations, testing, production, price, example of specific applications. Reasons to use this material.

7. UHPC: Properties, composition, advantages, limitations, price, production, testing, example of applications.

8. Fair-face concrete, formwork. (Coloured concrete, Graphic concrete. Formwork systems.) Classification. Options. Properties, composition, advantages, limitations, production, testing, price, example of specific applications.

9. Lightweight concretes, heavyweight concretes. Features, composition, advantages, limitations, production, testing, price, example applications.

10. Shotcrete. Properties, composition, advantages, limitations, production, testing, price, example applications.

11. Treatment of concrete. Climatic influences and their consequences for concrete properties. Measures. Internal treatment.

12. Durability. Concrete and aggressive environments. Concrete under fire load. Carbonation, freezing and thawing with and without CHRL, chemical aggressiveness. Alkaline-silica reaction. Concrete with resistance to pressure water seepage. Primary resistance of concrete versus secondary protection. Concrete in a fire situation. Measures. Context. Examples of realizations.

13. Modern concrete in extraordinary conditions.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Visit to the laboratory; field trip, visit to the site.

Study Objective:

Recognition of new knowledge in technology and propreties of special concretes.
