Synopsis:

Origin and composition of soil, basic properties, classification. Stresses in soil. Permeability, compressibility and strength of soils, Mohr's theory of failure. Principles of laboratory and field testing of soils. Soil pressures on structures, slope stability. Bearing capacity and deformation in flat and deep foundations. Foundation technology, construction pits. Principles of foundation soil improvement. Basic principles of monitoring in geotechnical engineering.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Origin and composition of soil, basic properties.

2. Descriptive properties. Classification.

3. Stresses in soil, principle of effective stresses.

4. Permeability, compressibility and strength of soils.

5. Mohr's theory of failure.

6. Principles of laboratory and field testing of soils.

7. Soil pressures on structures.

8. Stability of slopes.

9. Bearing capacity and deformation of flat and deep foundations.

10. Foundation technology.

11. Construction pits.

12. Principles of foundation soil improvement.

13. Basic principles of control monitoring in geotechnical engineering.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Practical examples illustrating the topics of the lectures correspond to the individual points of the syllabus.

Study Objective:

To introduce the basic properties and behaviour of the soil environment. In the application part, explain the basic principles of designing of foundation structures in the surface and underground. Explanation of selected foundation technologies.
