- Synopsis:
-
Fundamental laws of high speed flows.
High speed flow in stream tubes at the delivery of mass, heat and mechanical energy. The effect of friction.
Particular types of supersonic flows (continuous expansion, shock waves).
Airfoils and wings at high speeds (subsonic, transonic and supersonic zones). Pressure distribution, the influence of Mach number on aerodynamic characteristics (lift, drag, pitching moment).
Specific features of transonic flows.
- Requirements:
-
Completing the courses: Fluid Mechanics, Low Speed Aerodynamics.
- Syllabus of lectures:
-
Compressibility of fluids.
Fundamental laws of high speed flows. Mass, energy, the law of motion.
One-dimensional high speed flow. Cross-sectional change of stream tubes. Delivery of mass, heat, mechanical energy. Friction. Normal shock waves.
Potential description of high speed flows. Physical and velocity planes.
Airfoils and wings at subsonic speeds. Pressure distribution, lift distribution. Swept wings. Wings of small aspect ratio.
Fundamental examples of supersonic flows. Elementary edges, continuous expansion, shock waves. Interference of waves.
Airfoils and wings at supersonic speeds. Wave drag. Pressure distributions (subsonic and supersonic leading edges). Aerodynamic coefficients (lift, drag, pitching moment).
Transonic speeds. Pressure and velocity distributions past an airfoil. Aerodynamic coefficients (lift, drag, pitching moment). Means to attenuate the wave crisis. Supersonic airfoils.
