Anotace:

Students get familiar with the Finite Element Method, the currently dominant tool for numerical modeling in geotechnics. Emphasis is placed on introducing the basic principles of the Finite Element Method and their subsequent application to selected problems of Geotechnical Engineering. The course summarises the types of finite elements used in geotechnical applications, material models suitable for the description of ground deformation, and selected specifics associated with numerical modeling in geotechnics. This knowledge is further applied in the modelling of foundation, embedded walls, and stability problems.

Požadavky:

Elaboration of tasks solved in exercises and individual tasks as agreed.

Osnova přednášek:

1. Introduction to numerical modeling in geotechnics. Principle of the Finite Element Method.

2. Basic equations and concepts of the Finite Element Method explained on elementary 1D examples—comparison with the exact solution.

3. Basic plane strain problems solved by the finite element method manually and simultaneously by a code.

4. Overview of common types of finite elements used in geotechnical problems. Strategies for solving nonlinear problems.

5. Material models—overview and their calibration from laboratory tests.

6. Shallow foundations—influence of the element size and material models.

7. Embedded walls—calculation phases and excavation forces.

8. Embedded walls—contact elements and modeling of ground anchors.

9. Slope stability—equivalent plastic deformation and shear strength reduction.

10. Water effects—demonstration of the influence of water level on slope stability and basic introduction to flow modeling.

11. Demonstration of the influence of the model size on examples.

12. Consolidation modeling—settlement of an embankment dam.

13. Reserve. Practicing modeling on selected examples.

Osnova cvičení:

Solving problems corresponding to the topic of the lecture.

Cíle studia:

The aim of the study is to introduce the numerical modeling of geotechnical problems using the finite element method and to extend the description of soil behavior with advanced material models.
