Synopsis:

Students will learn the internal structure of the UNIX operating system, with the administration of its basic subsystems and with the security principles. They will understand the differences between user and administrator roles. They will get theoretical and practical knowledge of user management and administration, of users access rights, file systems, disk subsystems, processes, memory, network services and remote access, and in the areas of system deployment and virtualization. In the labs, they will verify the knowledge from the lectures on specific examples from practice.

Requirements:

Practical user knowledge of Unix / Linux operating system at BI-PS1 course level (Shell programming 1) is assumed. Completing the course BI-OSY (Operating Systems) will help.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Administration principles, user identity, user administration.

2. Administrator rights and their acquisition, special access rights.

3. [2] Security, authentication modules, privileges, roles.

5. Disk administration, file systems.

6. The UFS file system, backup techniques, RAID technologies.

7. Advanced file systems (ZFS).

8. Network file systems (NFS).

9. Networking, network interfaces, network services configuration.

10. Operating system start and shutdown.

11. Processes, priorities, system limits, quotas.

12. Virtualization.

13. Kernel.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Introduction, User administration I

2. User administration II, Changing identity, sudo, ACL

3. RBAC, Privileges

4. Disk management, swap

5. Filesystems, fsck

6. Snapshot, Volume Manager

7. Filesystem ZFS

8. Configuring NFS

9. System services

10. Process limits, disk quotas

11. Network interface configuration, DNS client, syslog

12. Virtualization: Creating zones (Solaris)

13. System installation

Study Objective:

Students became familiar with the internal structure of Unix operating systems and administration of their basic subsystems. In the seminars, the information from the lectures will be practically verified on concrete examples executed in the administration mode in Solaris and / or Linux OS.

Students get theoretical and practical knowledge of tools for monitoring, analyzing and debugging the system, user administration, implementation and management of file systems, disk subsystems, processes, memory, network services, shared file systems, name services, remote access, virtualization, installation and booting operating system.
