Synopsis:

Waves in an elastic environment, dynamic properties of soils, methods of laboratory and field determination of dynamic properties of soils, suitability of individual quantities for solving specific geomechanical problems, laboratory measurements

Syllabus of lectures:

Earthquakes, earthquake mechanism, earthquake intensity and earthquake risk

Engineering seismicity, seismic loads

Dynamic properties of soils

Determination of in-situ dynamic properties

Determination of dynamic properties in the laboratory.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Students will work independently or in teams to perform laboratory measurements to determine the dynamic modulus of soil in shear. They will also calculate basic problems for determining dynamic properties of soils based on wave propagation velocity in soils and penetration tests.

Study Objective:

The aim is to introduce students to the basics of soil dynamics, methods of laboratory and field determination of dynamic properties of soils and the suitability of individual quantities for solving specific geomechanical problems.
