Supervisor:
Department of Geotechnics
Synopsis:

The course focuses on the understanding of basic geological laws and principles in relation to architecture, civil engineering and urban planning. Emphasis is placed on explaining the influence of geological processes, both endogenous and exogenous, on the rock environment and how the geological situation affects the design of structures and their interaction with the rock environment. At the same time, attention is paid to the technical properties of rocks with regard to their practical applications. The course also includes a brief introduction to the regional geology of the Czech Republic.

Requirements:

The practicum concludes at the end of the semester with rock recognition.

Credit requirements (z): the credit consists of two successfully completed separate parts.

1. recognition of 8 rock samples, for each sample 1 point for each of the 5 sub-properties, min. for successful completion 60% of the points obtained. Carried out as part of the practicum, provided by the relevant teachers.

2. Written test on the subject matter covered in the lectures, min. for successful completion of this part is 50% of the points obtained from 15 questions. The lecturer is responsible for the test.

Syllabus of lectures:

Week 1: Introduction, the role of geology in civil engineering practice, the Earth's structure, the theory of new global tectonics, the lithosphere, the rocks classification, the rock cycle.

Week 2: Magmatism, shapes of magmatic structures. Volcanism, classification and morphological shapes of volcanic structures, post-volcanic phenomena, overview of igneous and volcanoclastic rocks.

Week 3: Sedimentary rocks, sedimentary system, mechanism of sedimentation, facies, diagenesis, strata, concordance, discordance, importance of fossils in geology. Metamorphism, metamorphosed rock system.

Week 4: Structural geology, epigenetic and orogenetic movements, tectonic faults, practical significance of tectonic faults, measurement, evaluation and imaging of tectonic features.

Week 5: Seismics, classification, types of earthquake waves and their registration, intensity of earthquakes, hazards, spread in the Czech Republic and in the world.

Week 6: Water cycle, surface water activity - erosion, transport, accumulation.

Week 11: Geological and engineering geological maps. Monitoring, sounding.

Week 12: Basics of regional geology of the Czech Republic - underlying structure.

Week 13: Basics of regional geology of the Czech Republic - overlying structure.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Week 1: Introduction. Classification of rocks according to genesis. Rock-forming minerals. Practical recognition.

Week 2: Igneous rock system - plutonic rocks, vein rocks.

Week 3: Igneous rock system - extrusive rocks, repetition of igneous rocks.

Week 4: Repetition of igneous rocks. Sedimentary rock system - introduction, textural and structural features, clastic sediments.

Week 5: Sedimentary rock system - clastic, chemogenic and organogenic sediments. Repetition of sedimentary rocks.

Week 6: Metamorphosed rock system - introduction, textural and structural features; mechanically, shock and contact metamorphosed rocks, regional metamorphosis.

Study Objective:

The aim of the study is to understand the influence of geological processes on the properties of the rock environment in relation to the design of building structures. Another objective is to understand the influence of exogenous processes on the engineering properties of rocks and to respect the basic natural phenomena that a civil engineer may encounter in his/her practice.

Another objective is to show the possibilities of using natural stone in civil engineering.
