- Synopsis:
-
The course focuses on understanding of natural processes and human impacts determining water quality of surface waters and gives background to water quality modelling in natural and technical systems. Lectures cover processes and environmental factors effecting composition of surface waters, water pollution and its categories, properties, impacts and sources, ecological functions, processes, human impacts and protective measures in running and standing surface waters, water quality measurement and monitoring and legislative approach to water quality protection. Exercises provide a systematic approach to mass balances, transport and transformation processes, ideal reactors, real reactors and natural systems hydraulics and residence time distribution, advection-dispersion-transformation.
- Requirements:
-
On-going solution of examples in exercises, submission of selected examples, execution and evaluation of the tracer experiment. Mandatory participation in invited lectures and the filed trip.
- Syllabus of lectures:
-
1. Water usage and requirements on water quality
2. Natural composition of surface waters - cycles of basic compounds, processes and environmental factors
3. Water pollution I - pollution categories, their properties and impacts (pollutants causing oxygen depletion, nutrients, toxic substances, suspended solids, thermal pollution)
4. Water pollution II - pollution categories, their properties and impacts (acidifying substances, plastics, pathogenic microorganisms, pollutants affecting organoleptic characteristics)
5. Water pollution sources - point and no-point sources, rainfall driven sources, accidents
6. Special lecture on micropollutants as an emerging important pollution category
