Synopsis:

The course „Stone in Architecture“ is an excursion into the use of natural stone as a building and decorative material, not only from the perspective of the present but also from the past. Emphasis is placed on the familiarity with the main properties of rocks that affect their usability in practice, what influences these properties both in the formation itself and over time in construction. Attention is paid to the methods of quarrying stone, the possibilities and methods of its working, the specifics of the use of stone in the exterior and interior. At the same time, attention is paid to the problems of durability and restoration and reconstruction of stone objects. Last but not least, students are introduced to the basic technical standards related to the issue. The course includes two excursions to the building and decorative stone of Prague, if possible also to a demonstration of the reconstruction or restoration of a historical building.

Syllabus of lectures:

Week 1: Basic rock system, categorization of building and noble stones. Basic properties of rocks

Week 2: Stone as part of our lives - as a building, construction, architectural, decorative and artistic element.

Week 3: Methods of quarrying stone, important deposits of building stone in the Czech Republic, import from abroad.

Week 4: Methods of working natural stone, types of surfaces, tool trace after working. Types of stone products.

Week 5: Use of natural stone in interiors and exteriors, advantages and disadvantages. Procedures and differences in the use of stone in new and historic buildings.

Week 6: Durability and degradation of natural stone. Treatment, maintenance and renovation of natural stone structures and products.

Week 7: Technical standards for the use and installation of natural stone.

Week 8: Excursions to selected sites in Prague - e.g. National Museum

Week 9: Excursions to selected sites in Prague - e.g. Prague Castle

Week 10: Excursions to selected sites in Prague - e.g. Old Town/Vyšehrad

Week 11: Presentation of seminar papers

Week 12: Presentation of seminar papers

Week 13: Final excursion - location by arrangement

Syllabus of tutorials:

Practices are smoothly connected to the individual lectures and intertwined. They focus mainly on physical demonstrations of rocks, working, etc.

Study Objective:

The aim of the study is to understand the complexity of natural stone in architecture, both in the present and in the past.
