Synopsis:

Knowledge of macromolecular structure is crucial for the understanding of its function. The subject is focused on the introduction to building blocks of macromolecules, overall structure and its structure:function relationship including macromolecular complexes.

Requirements:

High school chemistry.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Chemical bonds, proteins, saccharides, nucleic acids

2. Primary, secondary, tertiary and quarternary structure of proteins

3. Protein folding

4. Structure of nucleic acids, interaction motives of protein:nucleic acids complexes

5. Basic biophysical methods, methods of structure determination of macromolecules

6. Macromolecular crystallography

7. Structure of enzymes, drug design

8. Structure of viruses and viral proteins

9. Structure and function of membranes and membrane proteins

10. Structure and function of components of immune system

11. Large macromolecular complexes (respiration, transcription, translation)

Syllabus of tutorials:

Individual work covers composition of several protocols according to the manual and independent analysis of an actual structure biology paper.

Study Objective:

Goals of study are following: an independent analysis of a macromolecular structure, understanding of publications related to structures of macromolecules.

Study materials:

Compulsory literature:
