Department of Geotechnics
Synopsis:

Environment. Natural factors of mass movements. Mass movements caused by human activities - landfills, tailings, dumps, underground storage sites including radioactive waste. Environmental changes during construction. Protection of historic towns and monuments. Aspects of site selection, information sources, conflicts of interest. The perspective of the engineer and the naturalist is presented.

Requirements:

135GMO1, 135GMO2

Syllabus of lectures:

Week 1: Areas of activity of environmental geotechnics, its status, international congresses, the basic range of what is dealt with here: i) the issue of waste, its disposal on the surface and underground; ii) the management of old environmental burdens

Week 2: Principles and basic philosophy of waste management - minimize waste, then recover as much as possible, then landfill, incinerate, etc. Issues of selecting a suitable disposal site - geological and geo-environmental background

Week 3: Municipal solid waste landfills - physical, chemical, biological process after landfill disposal, gas evolution, landfill leachate. Cross sections through landfill - requirements for landfill sealing systems - earth, geomembranes, bentonite mattresses - performance requirements, verification.

Week 4: Above-level clay dumps in North Bohemia - quantity, types of dumps, basic properties and their change over time - stability, deformation, surface erosion, principles of construction on dumps

Week 5: Tailings ponds - overview of types of tailings ponds - power plant ash, tailings from chemical ore processing plants, from ore processing plants - their extent, methods of construction, properties of ash - possibility of application in construction. Stability of tailings, flow network, deformation, requirements in terms of internal and surface erosion

Week 6: Radioactive waste - segregation, specifics, storage for LLW and ILW

Week 7: Highly radioactive waste - spent fuel elements from NPPs - temporal view of storage and disposal, importance of underground laboratory - deep underground storage of HLW - requirements, principles, foreign experience, bentonite seals

Week 8: Extent of old environmental contamination in the world and in the Czech Republic - phases of the remediation process - risk analysis - contamination criteria - basic types of contaminants

Week 9: Contamination dispersion in time and space - transport equations for measuring input values - permeability, dispersion, diffusion, sorption, half-life

Week 10: Remediation methods - partitioning - in situ, on site, off site. Application of remediation by encapsulation - vertical sealing barriers

Week 11: Other remediation methods, mainly remediation pumping + natural attenuation, remediation stabilisation methods, solidification, permeable barriers

Week 12: Brownfields construction issues - specifics, subdivision, geoenvironmental survey, possibility of using old foundations

Week 13: Issues of natural disasters - interaction with building structures
