Synopsis:

Students will gain an overview of how to protect building structures from corrosion and other harmful influences such as UV radiation, acid rain, etc. Students will also learn about methods and technologies of surface treatment. The course consists of 6 lectures and 6 exercises. In the lectures, students will learn about both historical and more importantly modern surface treatments for different types of structures. In the exercises, students will perform a surface treatment on a fragment of a structure and will be able to check the quality of the work done by themselves in the last exercise by means of a tear-off test.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction to coatings, history of coatings.

2. Harmful effects on building structures, protection by modern coatings.

3. Treatment of metal structures, plaster systems for masonry structures.

4. Effect of surface treatments on durability of the structure, focusing on modern insulation systems.

5. Lecture by a practitioner, treatment of concrete structures.

6. Practitioner lecture, treatment of timber structures.

1. Surface treatment of a fragment of a selected structure I.

2. Surface treatment of a fragment of a selected structure II.

3. Student presentations I

4. Student presentations II

5. Tear test

6.Credit test.
