Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction, history of timber structures, properties

2. Limit states - principles, load, basic load case

3. Connections - principles, types, calculation, examples

4. Glued laminated wood - production, properties of laminated timber beams

5. Other beams made of laminated timber - single tapered, double tapered, curved beam

6. Timber rigid frames - principles, types, calculation

7. Timber arches - principles calculation, details, transportation and installation

8. Lattice girders - principles, types, structural design

9. Frame and panel systems

10. Timber footbridges and bridges - principles, loads, details

11. Durability of timber building constructions

12. Revision lecture for the exam or the pre-exam

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Design of the nailed lattice girder tension member

2. Resistance of a timber column loaded by a centric axial force

3. Design of the floor timber beam according to both ULS and SLS

4. Check of a floor bearing structure

5. Design of a timber rafter as a part of a queen post roof structure

Study Objective:

The aim of the study is to learn the basic principles of a timber structures design and their use in civil engineering.
