Department of Computer Systems
Synopsis:

Students understand the architecture and internals of the Windows OS and acquire the skills to administrate the Windows OS. They are able use the standard administration and security tools and apply advanced ActiveDirectory administration methods. They are able to solve problems by applying appropriate troubleshooting methods and administrate heterogeneous systems. Students are able to effectively configure centralised administration of a computer network.

Requirements:

Basic knowledge of OS and virtual machine architectures. Knowledge of TCP/IP.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Fundamental Windows terms and concepts. History and development of the OS. System architecture and internals.

2. System administration mechanisms, standard administration tools. Security, security tools.

3. Memory media management, file systems. Network model. TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP.

4. Implementation of networking and security services in Windows; server, redirector. Active Directory.

5. Group policy. Advanced AD administration methods. Most common mistakes when installing AD.

6. System migration and deployment. Programmatic means of administering the OS and AD, administering Windows in a heterogeneous environment.

7. Solving critical situations, backup, troubleshooting.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Block I - Installing the Windows OS: The first block concerns the use of administration and troubleshooting tools in the Windows environment. Use of native administration tools and extensions, selection of third-party tools. Students learn to identify and quantify processes (services, processes, threads) as well as solve critical situations and design an optimal and secure OS configuration. Project - part I. Block II - AD design and implementation: In the second block, students design a real system that uses object access and group policy, with a complex structure (multiple domains and forests). The designed system is implemented with respect to efficient administration and high security. Project - part II. Block III - Programmatic means of OS and AD administration: The third block concerns the OS and AD administration using programmatic means (Shell, VB Script, C ). Project - part III. Block IV - Students present the key points of their projects and answer questions. Assessment.

Study Objective:

Students are introduced to concepts and recommended practices regarding Microsoft Windows OS installation and administration, with particular attention to centralized administration of a MS Windows based network. After successful completion, students will be able to effectively configure centralized administration of a computer network.
