Department of Measurement
Synopsis:

The subject acquaints students with the current technology used in aircraft with respect to instruments, systems and sensors working in the low-frequency field and with methods for basic processing of system data. The course includes a detailed description of aircraft instrumentation and its resistance to external influences, a description of aircraft power sources and power electrical engineering, analysis of instruments and systems for measurement of engine and aerometric quantities, and a description of emergency and operational diagnostics. It thus develops the background related to nowadays technology and methodology utilized on aircraft. The course provides a detailed overview of quantitative and qualitative research and analytical methods and their integration into signal/data processing and aircraft system design principles. The last part of the course discusses the current publishing activities in the field of aircraft instrumentation.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

1. Aircraft avionics, cockpits - overview. Avionics immunity to impacts of ambient environment. EMC and its application into aircraft, examples.

2. Aircraft power systems and power distribution.

3. Parameters definition of aircraft propulsions, N1&N2, temperature, pressure, torque & vibration measurement systems. Fire and ice annunciators.

4. Complex engine monitoring systems. Fuel systems, level sensors. Fuel flow & fuel used measurement systems.

5. Barometrical measurements of altitude. Altimeters and their constructions. International standard atmosphere. Angle of attack measurements.

6. Air, vertical speed, and Mach-number measurements. Total/static air temperature measurements. Air data computer - pressure based systems & sensors.

7-14. Discussion on recently published journal articles dealing with current technology, methodology and trends in aircraft related research.

Syllabus of tutorials:

The student will complete selected exercises, where they become familiar with the subjects discussed during lectures. Exercises will be supplemented by presentations of individually studied problems that will be discussed within the group.
