Synopsis:

This course is designed to prepare students to independently conduct applied user research projects and to develop a foundational understanding of key psychological principles essential for designing optimal user experiences. While it includes relevant theoretical foundations, the emphasis is on practical application within professional design practice. Students will gain hands-on experience with research methods and learn how to apply psychological insights across a range of design domains.

Syllabus of tutorials:

User Research Project

- Designing and conducting an exploratory/generative research initiative aimed at identifying innovation opportunities within a specific domain

- Translating user research insights into innovative concepts

- Training in user interviewing techniques

- Developing teamwork and collaboration skills

- Presenting and pitching research-based ideas effectively

Customer-Focused Innovation Workshop a hands-on experience applying design thinking principles throughout the product innovation lifecycle.

Soft skills development (in the form of a full-day workshop) focused on cultivating key competencies essential for success in daily professional practice, including empathy, emotional awareness, small-group dynamics, understanding personal role preferences, conflict management, cross-cultural communication, and self-reflection.

Study Objective:

By the end of the course, students will:

- Understand key psychological conceptsprimarily from cognitive, personality, and social psychologythat inform user behavior and decision-making in interactive contexts.

- Be able to critically apply psychological principles to support design decisions and improve user experience.

- Gain proficiency in user research methods, including planning, conducting, and interpreting studies that generate actionable insights and inform various stages of the design process.

- Learn to Identify opportunities for innovation based on user insights and behavioral patterns.

- Strengthen their ability to apply research findings in real-world business and organisational environments, aligning insights with business goals and collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
