The subject Assessment and Retrofitting of Concrete in Structures deals with the most frequent failures of concrete structures, methods to determine properties of concrete used in structure and extent of its deterioration. Students´ theoretical knowledge is fixed in laboratory training. Principal ways of retrofitting of concrete structures and practical examples of their application are introduced as well.
- Requirements:

Attendance at lectures is voluntary but highly recommended. Attendance at seminars is mandatory. Students are required to prepare laboratory protocols of specimen production or tests performed, and obliged to pass a credit test with a score higher than 60 % of the maximum points.
- Syllabus of lectures:

1. Components and recipes of concrete and their influence on concrete properties. Model examples of currently and previously used recipes. Current and historical systems for classifying concrete according to its properties.
2. Degradation processes of concrete. Causes, process and consequences. Manifestation on structures including specific examples from practice.
3. Non-destructive concrete testing methods: Surface hardness tests, resonance method, rebound method, methods for localization of reinforcement and others.
4. Destructive concrete testing methods: Tests of mechanical properties, durability tests, carbonation tests and others.
5. Construction technical survey. Principles for developing a test programme, selecting the location and number of test spots, evaluating and interpreting the results.
6. Remedy methods and quality control. The most common technologies for retrofitting and protecting concrete and reinforcement. Principles for controlling the implementation of remediation.

1. Elaboration of test specimens for the next seminars.
2. Localisation of the reinforcement in concrete.
3. Initiation of concrete durability tests.
4. Non-destructive tests of concrete mechanical properties on previously elaborated specimens.
5. Destructive tests of concrete mechanical properties on previously elaborated specimens.
6. Finalisation and evaluation of concrete durability tests.
- Study Objective:

Explain relation of composition and properties of concrete. Explain differences of concretes used in presence and in past. Explain the issues of the formation and manifestation of concrete damage. Present to the students the most common diagnostics procedures of concrete in existing structure, their potential and margins. Explain process of results evaluation and determination of the extent of damage. Familiarize the students with principles of the design of basic measures of repair of damaged concrete.
