Department of Nuclear Chemistry
Synopsis:

The first part of the lecture addresses general environmental issues, the impact of human activities, and strategies for environmental protection. It then covers the composition and properties of the individual spheres of the biogeosphere, natural processes within them, biogeochemical cycles of substances, and environmental radioactivity. The course continues with an overview of the sources and types of pollution affecting the biogeosphere, the spread, chemical reactions, and effects of contaminants, and concludes with a discussion of key issues in radioecology.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

Humans and the environment

Composition of the lithosphere, basic processes within it, and the influence of human activity

Atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric processes

The hydrosphere, its composition and processes

The biosphere, ecology, and radioecology

Biogeochemical cycling of substances

Natural sources of ionizing radiation

Sources of pollution in the biogeosphere

Dispersion, chemical reactions, and effects of contaminants in the biogeosphere

Biological effects of ionizing radiation

Transport of radionuclides in abiotic components of the environment

Transfer of radionuclides through the biosphere, including food chains

Humans and the environment

Composition of the lithosphere, basic processes within it, and the influence of human activity

Syllabus of tutorials:
Study Objective:

The student will acquire fundamental knowledge of environmental chemistry, including the processes and consequences of environmental pollution caused by human activity. The course also introduces the topics of environmental radioactivity and radioecology.
