Synopsis:

The course focuses on the didactics of teaching engineering design within technical subjects taught at secondary schools. It builds on a systematic introduction to didactics, explaining the significance of engineering design knowledge and skills alongside the specific features of teaching this subject. The core challenges of teaching engineering design are explained with regard to the type of vocational school, the specialization of various fields of study or School Education Programmes (ŠVP), as well as the impact of the diverse intellectual capabilities of students at vocational secondary schools. It covers not only methods for solving engineering design tasks but also teaching formats and didactic approaches (methods) used in education.

The course serves as a preparation for teaching topics in the field of Engineering Design. The lectures will be accompanied by practical examples from industry. All topics will be supplemented by practical exercises on real-world tasks, emphasizing a didactic approach to solving model examples.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

1. Didactics and engineering design. The importance of knowledge and skills required to design machines and their components.

2. Teaching formats and methods in engineering design education.

3. Specific features of teaching engineering design with respect to the school type and School Education Programmes (ŠVP).

4. Formats and methods of teaching engineering design considering diverse motivation and intellectual levels of students. Working with gifted students and students with special educational needs. Application of didactic methods according to learning objectives and course content. Continuous monitoring of student performance and grading principles. Individualized approach. Formative and summative student assessment.

5. Didactic preparation for teaching the following topics: Modern engineering design methods. Technical standardization. Design for manufacturability (DFM).

6. Didactic preparation for teaching Computer-Aided Design (CAD) overview, capabilities, and teaching efficient workflows in CAD systems.

7. Concrete examples of teaching the application of CAD systems in component design, with respect to school type/specialization and varying intellectual levels of vocational secondary school students.

8. Concrete examples of creating technical documentation (both drawing-based and model-based/drawingless). Standardization. Product data management (PDM).

9. Didactic preparation for teaching Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM), and computer-aided measurement and inspection.

10. E-learning capabilities and suitable examples of application in engineering design education.

11. Didactic preparation for teaching 3D scanning and 3D printing overview, possibilities for utilization in the engineering design process.

12. Didactic preparation for utilizing Virtual Reality (VR) tools overview, capabilities, group and individual work.

13. 3D scanning, 3D printing, and Virtual Reality tools demonstrations of appropriate use to increase the engagement and attractiveness of engineering design education.
