Synopsis:

The aim of this lab course is to introduce the students to the fundamentals of semiconductors and solid state physics, and with hands-on measurements of basic properties of materials and devices.

Requirements:

Hand in laboratory protocols from individual tasks.

Syllabus of lectures:
Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Preparation of a semiconductor sample - cutting; 3D modeling and printing an adapter

2. Working with a glove box, grinding and polishing a sample

3. Working with a multimeter, measuring electrical resistivity using the four probe method and van der Pauw method

4. Vacuum deposition of metal layers, visit to the Institute of Physics

5. Contacting the sample, measuring current-voltage characteristic (I-V curve)

6. Working with an oscilloscope and function generator, rapid tracing of I-V curves of various electronic components

7. Atomic force microscopy (AFM)

8. Measuring contact resistance, measuring temperature dependence of electrical resistivity

9. Luminescence and Raman scattering

10. Measuring the type, density and mobility of charge carriers using the Hall and Seebeck effects

11. Measuring thermal conductivity and heat capacity using the LFA method

12. Measuring the efficiency of a thermoelectric generator

13. Measuring the I-V curve and spectral dependence of the response of a photoelectric cell and photoelectric diode
