Synopsis:

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with modern management and its importance for the successful functioning of the organization. It deals with the competences and profile of the manager as prerequisites for the successful performance of the manager's profession. The course introduces students to both sequential (organizing, leading people, control) and parallel (analyzing, decision-making, implementation) management functions and their practical use. Other categories of management, such as change management, time management, lean management and others, will also be explained to the students. The course also includes an introduction to crisis management. The subject is supplemented with basic information regarding the differences between a medical facility and a classic company. The seminars are practically focused, it is a series of case studies and group works used to apply theoretical knowledge to a real situation.

Requirements:

Credit requirements:

- active participation in seminars, development of case studies + individual requirements at seminars;

- a maximum of 2 absences from seminars are allowed

- obtaining min. 25 out of 50 points for seminar activities

Exam requirements:

- the exam consists of a written part and an oral part;

a) WRITTEN TEST:

- it is designed on the basis of material from the lectures;

- a maximum of 30 points can be obtained;

b) ORAL EXAMINATION:

- only students who get at least 50% of the written test (i.e. 15 points) can take the oral exam

- the student must demonstrate the ability to comment on circuit questions and answer additional questions from the examiner;

- a maximum of 20 points can be obtained

If the student successfully completes the written part of the exam, but not the oral part, he only repeats the second part of the exam in the alternate term.

The total point evaluation of the subject is 100 points=100%, the resulting classification is given according to the ECTS scale.

Syllabus of lectures:

• Introduction to the subject. The concept and position of management in the organization. Definition of management, concepts and tasks of management. Modern approaches in management. Profile and personality of the manager. Typology of managerial styles.

• Planning, meaning of planning, tasks of planning. Breakdown of plans in terms of substance, time, purpose and level of management processes. Hierarchy of goals in the organization, MBO.

• Human resource management. Leadership and conditions for its effective deployment.

• Decision-making, basic concepts. Decision theory. Classification and structure of decision-making processes. Substantive and procedural aspects of decision-making. Decision support systems.

• Organizing. Basic elements and logic of the organizing process. Types of organizational structures. Process and departmental OS. Modern types of OS. Outsourcing in healthcare.

• Control activity. Position of control activity within corporate management. Types of controls and assessment of their effectiveness. Internal audit procedures.

•Communication. General principles of successful communication. Forms of communication. Effective management of meetings. Specifics of communication in healthcare facilities

• Specifics of managing organizations in the healthcare sector – a lecture by an extern from practice

• Selected chapters from management: I. Time management - efficiency of use of working time, analysis techniques

• Selected chapters from management: II. Lean management - mission and meaning of LM, selected LM techniques, examples of LM application

• Selected chapters from management: III. Change management and transformation management - content, principles and objectives of change management, change management process, types of changes, selected approaches for change management;

• Selected chapters from management. IV. Crisis management and crisis communication - internal and external causes of crises, risk analysis tools, elimination tools, etc.

Syllabus of tutorials:

• Organization of seminars. Introduction to the subject, assessment. Historical development of management - important personalities in the history of management (Taylor, Baťa, Ford, Mayo, etc.)

• Modern approaches in planning – „helpers“ in planning, online support, the most common mistakes

• Subjective vs. objective prerequisites for the performance of managerial work.

• Decision-making – priorities and time frame, decision-making tactics

• Case study on the topic „Creation of organizational rules of ZZ“ - example of existing organizational rules, usual structure of organizational rules, creation of organizational rules of fictitious ZZ

• Case study on the topic „Creation of organizational rules of ZZ“ - presentation of results and evaluation

• Case study on the topic „Control“ - examples of guidelines and internal procedures for: a) a real medical facility b) a manufacturer of medical devices. Discussion on the topic of „sustainability of processes“ and the frequency of inspections.

• Case study on „Communication, communication skills“ Decomposition of a communication problem at a pharmaceutical company.

• Case studies on the topic „Effective time management“ - demonstration of proper time management and discussion of the benefits arising from it, demonstration of errors in time allocation and prioritization.

• Case studies on „Lean production“ and „Lean management“ in healthcare - discussion of the advantages of individual approaches, limitations in their application, analysis of techniques for process analysis (VSM, MOST, etc.)

• Sample and analysis of professional publications (case studies) in the area of ​​„Change Management in healthcare facilities“ - discussion of the application of Kotter, Lewin, Soft System Methodology, Adkar or 7S techniques

• Case study “Hospital crisis management practices right and wrong” - COVID – 19 and hospital crisis management practices

• Final discussion and evaluation.
