Synopsis:

The content of the course is chosen so that it is sufficient to understand and master the issues in other related subjects. The course covers diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, including imaging systems. The student will learn the basic technical parameters of equipment commonly used in clinical practice. The course covers the categorization of medical devices, blood pressure measurement devices, measurement of bioelectric activity of the heart (ECG) - electrocardiographs, patient vital signs monitors, measurement of bioelectric activity of the brain (EEG) - electroencephalograph, measurement of bioelectric activity of the muscles (EMG) - electromyograph, electrosurgical units (ESU), pacemakers, defibrillators, intensive care unit equipment, pulmonary ventilators and basic imaging systems for X-ray, CT, SPECT, PET and ultrasound. The course also includes an overview of methods used in radiotherapy.

Requirements:

The student writes a credit test in the form of two partial tests in the middle and at the end of the semester. The course ends with an exam.

Syllabus of lectures:

- Categorisation of medical devices, EU regulation.

- Blood pressure measuring devices.

- Measurement of bioelectric activity of the heart (ECG) - electrocardiographs, measurement of bioelectric activity of the brain (EEG) - electroencephalograph, measurement of bioelectric activity of muscles (EMG) - electromyograph.

- Electrosurgical units (ESU).

- Pacemakers, defibrillators.

- Intensive care units - equipment, pulmonary ventilators, methods of artificial pulmonary ventilation.

- Conventional imaging systems - X-ray.

- Computed tomographic imaging systems - CT.

- Nuclear medicine imaging systems - SPECT, PET.

- Ultrasound imaging systems - ultrasound.

Syllabus of tutorials:

- Introductory exercise, OHS, course requirements, familiarization with tasks.

- Blood pressure measurement.

- Electrocardiography.

- Vital signs monitors.

- Pacemakers, defibrillators.

- Electrosurgical units (ESUs), infusion equipment and linear dosing devices.

- Electrotherapy, magnetotherapy.
