Synopsis:

The purpose of the course is to introduce in a broader context the material that is subsequently discussed in detail in the specialized courses of the study program. It is important to show the decomposition of the function of a complex system into sub-components and to demonstrate the use of different types of communication systems and networks on selected real applications.

Requirements:

no special knowledge requirement is necessary

Syllabus of lectures:

1. From communications infrastructure and services to the end device - an overview

2. Data communication models, formal notation of communication protocol functions

3. Applications and peer-to-peer networks

4. Practical fundamentals of Ethernet technology function and application

5. Wifi, wireless transmissions and sensor networks

6. Device addressing and routing basics in networks

7. Functional principles and applications of network elements in data networks (hub, bridge, switch, router, gateway, balancer)

8. Protocols, interfaces and services on the Internet. Examples of network applications

9. Decomposition of Web services system functions

10. Internet of Things and M2M application development platforms

11. Endpoint devices - basic concepts and block chain of information processing and transmission

12. Integrated electronics, nanotechnology

13. Signal processing - from packets to audio and video, standardisation, processes, documents, formats

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Preliminary exercises, health and safety, conditions of granting credit, introduction to the lab.

2. Get familiar with the lab. Network diagnostic tools.

3. The basics of configuration and control of Cisco routers

4. Lab: Wireshark, TCP UDP analysis

5. Lab: Domain Name System

6. Lab: E-mail

7. Lab: DHCP and NAT

8. Lab: Routing

9. Project definition

10. Lab: Virtual LAN

11. Lab: ADSL router

12. Lab: Cabling system

13. Assessment. Examination pre-term.

Study Objective:

The students will acquire broader understanding of communication networks and protocols to be help them better select their future study of more in-depth focused subjects in the field of networking.
