Synopsis:

The course is dedicated to mastering the plasma kinetic and current profile control in the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) v IPP MPG in Garching bei Muenchen in Germany with focus on real time plasma state reconstruction. The trainee will first get acquainted with methods of the plasma control in the AUG tokamak in real time, and learn of available sensors and actuators. In parallel, she will learn details of the offline data analyses, including the current IDA (Integrated Data Analyses) approach. She will contribute with her own work to systematic analysis of missing real time information that has significant impact on the overall quality of the plasma state reconstruction. The individual chapters and home work is studied at the “introductory” level”.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Get familiar with the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) real time diagnostics

2.Get familiar with AUG control system

3.Get familiar with the existing feedback control algorithms

4.Learn about data offline data analysis (IDA) and

5.Learn about data access algorithms on AUG

6.Study the influence of the errors in real time Te profile on the performance of the overall state reconstruction

7.Discuss and propose a method to obtain trustable real time estimates of Te on the top of pedestal

8.Identify exceptional situations when the above mentioned algorithms may fail and propose how to detect those in real time

9.Analyse the performance of the algorithm on larger set of discharges

10.Implement the algorithm in C++ so that it can be easily inserted to the AUG control system

11.Include the information about Te on the top of pedestal in RAPTOR state observer

12. Present the results to the AUG team
