Synopsis:

Main groups of engineering materials and their characteristics. Mechanical, physical, chemical properties of metals, polymers, ceramics, metallic glasses, and composites. Classification and designation of materials according to EN. Material and its role in the engineering design of a technical object. Selection of material with respect to utility properties. Typical applications of materials in power engineering, transportation, chemistry, electrical engineering and biomedicine.

Requirements:

Presence in practical lectures, completed protocols from practical lectures

Written and oral exam

• Selected applications of materials in the chemical and food industries

• Possibilities of using non-ferrous metals and their alloys

• Current application spectrum for cast materials

• Applications of composites in the aerospace industry

• Use of composites in the automotive industry

• Biomedical applications of metallic and non-metallic materials

• Materials with special physical properties in the electrical industry

• Significance of surface layers and coatings in applications in aggressive environments

• Application of structural polymer materials

• Use of tool steels for hot and cold work
