Synopsis:

An overview of the history of European art from antiquity to modern times

Requirements:

Submission of written work in the prescribed scope

passing the test

attendance is considered at the final exam ( min 8 out of 13 lectures)

Syllabus of lectures:

The subject introduces the student to the history of art in relation to the space of architecture and to other fields with special emphasis on the development of interdisciplinarity in art.

1. Review of the literature and definition of the subject

2. Antiquity, ritual, theater and visual arts

3. Imperium, ritual of power and art

4. The Middle Ages, art and music – liturgy and the development of sacred space.

5. „Thou shalt not make graven images of thyself“: the question of social taboos in art and theater

6. Baroque theatricality: between architecture, visual and dramatic work

7. Art and Theater in the Age of Enlightenment

8. Theatrical and musical spaces of the nineteenth century, their decoration

9. The industrial revolution and the sentimental landscape: the quarrel between the Enlightenment and the Romantic

10. Gesamtkunstwerk – all-art work

11. Inspiration from nature – art, scenography and architecture around 1900

12. Avant-garde: between artwork and performance

13. Art and new media
