Synopsis:

The subject Composition is the first project subject of the study program Scenic Technologies. Students should become familiar with understanding the structure of a work of art with an emphasis on understanding compositional connections.

Requirements:

Requirements for obtaining a graded credit:

Active participation in studio teaching

Max. three excused absences per semester.

Individual consultations outside of exercises do not replace mandatory attendance at classes.

Participation in inspection dates and presentations set by the head of the studio.

Submission of work within the prescribed deadline and format, to the extent set by the head of the studio.

Syllabus of lectures:

The course does not have continuous lectures, there will be two theoretical lectures at the beginning - see Course content.

Syllabus of tutorials:

The assignment contains a total of 5 tasks, which will be presented in a combination of drawing and models (so-called BOX)

1. SET DESIGNER / artist - creation, source of inspiration

Research of a selected world-class author (set designer / photographer / painter / sculptor / architect) and discussion of his/her work is a starting platform for students for their own creative activity. The author and his/her work will be briefly introduced in the lower part of the presentation box.

2. ELEMENTS - planar compositions / 4 abstract planar 2D compositions on a given theme, examples of assignments:

compositional categories (openness, closure), compositional principles (symmetry, asymmetry, rhythm, gradation), compositional elements (point, line, figure, synthesis)

3. SCENE - play of light and shadow / 3 shallow relief abstract compositions on a given theme, example of assignment: planar scenery, light and shadow

4. LAYERING - installation / 2 high relief abstract compositions on a given theme, example of assignment: layering of scenery

5. SCENE - spatial composition evoking a scenographic work, i.e. abstract design of a specific scene for a specific space, example of assignment: opera Aida

Study Objective:

- To arouse the student's interest in the field.

- To „transform“ his ways of thinking and graphic expression from the position of high school art creation to the position of a university engineer with a broad scope in the technical and artistic direction.

- To introduce the student to the world of theater, film and scenography through research of world authors

- To understand and master the work with compositional principles and categories (openness, closure, staticity, dynamism, symmetry, asymmetry, rhythm, gradation) and with the expressive means of harmonizing the scenographic work (scale, proportion, contrast, harmony, color, structure, tectonics, stereotomy).

- To learn and practice the basic principles of creating planar and spatial composition, i.e. composition as a harmonious, abstract composition of partial parts in relations to each other and to the whole.
